Empowering young minds through AI and Mathematics: Mustafa Saifeldeen’s journey at AIMS

In celebration of the International Day of Mathematics, a group of high school students recently experienced firsthand how mathematics powers cutting-edge technologies. Thanks to an outreach initiative led by emerging innovators like Mustafa Saifeldeen.

Mustafa, a Master’s student at the African Centre of Excellence in Internet of Things (ACEIoT), participated in an outreach program organized by the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS).

“I led a ‘Rotating Research Conversations & Mini-Activities’ session, where I introduced students to the basics of IoT, data collection, and Edge AI,” Mustafa explained. “Through interactive demonstrations using sensors and microcontrollers, we showed how mathematical concepts can be applied to develop real-world technological solutions.”

The session offered students a rare opportunity to interact with emerging technologies in a hands-on environment, sparking curiosity and inspiring future career paths in science and engineering.

Beyond outreach, Mustafa has been deeply involved in advanced AI development during his training at AIMS. One of his notable contributions includes the development of a multi-source Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) AI chatbot.

“The system allows users to query documents like PDFs and web pages and receive accurate, evidence-based answers with proper citations,” he noted. “It’s designed to ensure responses are strictly grounded in reliable sources, with built-in mechanisms to reduce hallucinations and improve trust.”

The chatbot also integrates features such as quiz generation, academic research support, and a commitment manager to track tasks and deadlines, making it a powerful tool for both students and researchers.

Mustafa’s journey at AIMS has been marked by rigorous academic training and practical innovation. He successfully completed a series of advanced courses covering machine learning fundamentals, optimization techniques like Stochastic Gradient Descent, and statistical methods essential for scientific research.

“The program combines strong theoretical foundations with hands-on applications,” Mustafa said. “It has equipped me with skills in R programming, Natural Language Processing, spatio-temporal data analysis, Generative AI, and interpretable machine learning.”
