Sylvie DUSENGE, the Innovator behind the IoT-based Tap & Go card

Sylvie DUSENGE, a graduate from the African Centre of Excellence in Internet of Things (ACEIoT) who specialized in Wireless Sensor Networking, has developed a device that will enable public transport users to electronically load their Tap & Go cards without relying on Tap & Go agents.
Tap & Go is a contactless smart card and mobile application system for public transportation, primarily used in Kigali. It allows commuters to pay for bus fares electronically, eliminating the need for cash. Currently, card operations are handled by designated agents.

A Novel IoT Based TAP&GO Card

Sylvie’s innovation allows users to electronically load credit through an ATM-like machine, which will automatically transfer the amount to the user’s Tap & Go card. Additionally, the accompanying mobile app enables users to transfer credit from one card to another.
This innovation addresses several challenges. mainly long queues of passengers waiting to be served, Instances of fraud where agents load less money than provided, Human errors in the card-loading process, among others
“With this technology, users will receive a monthly email statement consolidating all transactions made. This will help them better manage their transportation expenses,” Sylvie explained.
Once the project is complete and ready for commercialization, she plans to partner with Tap & Go company and install ATM machines at various bus parks, allowing passengers easy access to the service.
“After finalizing the project, I hope to partner with the Tap & Go company, which leads transportation payment solutions in Rwanda. This could be my contribution to improving the public transport system in the country,” she added.
