A Five - day Short course in LoRA technologies kicks off

Around 30 PhD students and other interested with the background in Internet of Things started a five -day long short course in Internet of Things with focus on LoRA technologies. The training will mainly focus on the development of sophisticated platforms architectures for smart objects, embedded intelligence and smart networks. The short course is the second following the one which was held in 2015.

In his opening remarks, Dr Ignace Gatare the Principal of College of Science and Technology labelled the training an opportunity for not only to boost knowledge at a low cost but also sharing experience within African context. He added that the African Centres of Excellence have provided a forum where many people can meet and develop network that can be translated into joint multidisciplinary research to advance technology in their respective countries.

Opening remarks by Dr Ignace Gatare, the Principal of UR-CST

This training focuses on IoT technology and presents cases studies on applications in Rwanda and other Eastern African Countries.

Prof. Santhi Kumaran, the Director of the Center of Excellence in Internet of Things argues that research driven by ambitious use cases and benefiting from innovation areas in components, systems, networking and web technologies needs to be carried out to respond to the ever increasing needs of future IoT systems in terms of scalability, heterogeneity, complexity and dynamicity. She added that IoT platforms should be open and easy-to-use to support third party innovation.

The training will feature LoRa and LoRaWAN protocols; Prototyping of sensor boards; Coding of LoRa sensors; Planning and deployment of a LoRa network; Collection, analysis and the visualization of the data among other topics.

Participants to the training include PhD students from the African Center of Excellence in Internet of Things and other interested with the background in Internet of Things from eight countries.

The training is jointly organized by the African Center of Excellence in Internet of Things (ACE-IoT) and the East African Institute for Fundamental Research (EAIFR) of the University of Rwanda in partnership with the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste Italy.
