AI4D Lab representatives from across Africa met at the African Center of Excellence in Internet of Things ( ACEIoT) to discuss collaboration on April 5th. The one-day workshop brought together 23 delegates from AI4D Lab Network from 11 African countries and shared their experiences regarding the impact of the labs on research outputs, the challenges they encountered, and strategies to overcome these challenges as the new AI lab is being established at UR's ACEIoT.
The TAIRI Lab at UR aims to explore the multidisciplinary and transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in addressing key sustainable development challenges in Rwanda. The research will focus on inclusive healthcare, agriculture, environmental management, and policy integration. The workshop discussions included the theory of change, learning partnership, Gender and Disability Inclusion in AI and how the AI labs collectively learn from each other.
The lab at the University of Rwanda (UR) follows establishment of similar 13 labs
in other 11 countries in Africa.
Participants also discussed partnership modalities that will promote ongoing mutual learning,
the theory of change that will guide the labs, and the importance of integrating
gender and disability inclusion in AI research and innovation.
This workshop was facilitated by Prof Jerry John Kponyo, Leader of RAIL lab in Ghana,
Mrs. Mahlet Hailemariam, Consultant, Dr. Matthew Smith, Senior Program Specialist,
Education and Science, IDRC, Mrs Anne and Magda from FCDO.
