As the world population is growing so is the waste produced. Most of these wastes are hazardous to environment and people. There is a need for proper waste management for ensuring the health and wellbeing of environment and people. However, analysis of literature shows that the practice of waste management and monitoring as well as corresponding research are still at infancy stage in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Focusing on Rwanda, this thesis aims at improving waste collection process in Kigali City. In order to attain such aim, the data from project beneficiaries based on services would be highly considerable. In terms of contribution, the prototype system presents an Internet of Things based waste monitoring application to collect, receive and do analysis of data from Wastebin stations in Kigali City.

Each Wastebin has a system composed of ultrasonic sensor, gas sensor to gather data and microcontroller to process these data. The data collected by these sensors are transferred via Application Programmable Interface to Thing Speak application that interact with If This Then That platform that send alter email message to notify the status of Wastebin. Such prototype serves as a basis for monitoring the process of waste collection in Kigali and in others cities in similar contexts.
