From 7th to 8th November 2019, the first cohort of PhD students held the second meeting with the Doctoral Committee for the comprehensive examination for doctoral candidature. This meeting is one of three meetings that should be held during PhD studies as stipulated in the general program structure of doctor of philosophy degree by research and the UR PhD program handbook.

The meeting was also attended by the UR Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs and Research Prof. Nelson Ijumba.

During this meeting, students presented their Extensive Research Proposals and research progress and the Doctoral Committee accessed every student’s progress. The first meeting held last year focused on the PhD Research Proposal Presentation where every student is required to present his/her revised PhD proposal for further guidance and suggestions to improve the Proposal.

In his opening remarks, the Principal of the College of Science and Technology, the host of the African Center of Excellence in Internet of Things, Dr. Ignace Gatare commended the team behind the management of the Center which is facilitating these students to achieve their goals. He called upon students to be focused on their projects but also thing of what to do after graduation.

“While working on your projects, start reflecting on your responsibility in finding solutions to existing challenges,reflect on how to transform and impact the society”, he urged.

During this meeting, if the performance of the candidate in the comprehensive examination is satisfactory, his/her registration shall be confirmed with Doctoral Candidature. If the performance is unsatisfactory, he/she shall be given one more opportunity to appear for the examination within six months of the first examination.
